Scrap Magic - Technique Guide by Tina Fallon

A wonderful range of templates which uses up all your left over scraps of paper and card. The templates also have designs on them where you can cut and fold, prick and stitch and paper weave.

Work out what sections of the templates you would like to use in your design and how they will be placed onto your card or paper. You can use a mix of paper scraps that compliment each other, or all the same design paper or simply a plain coloured piece of card.

You can use all the sections, or just some of them. Sections can also be made larger by extending the length as shown below. It may be an idea if you are new to the technique to pre- plan your layout onto a scrap of paper first.

Take your template and place onto the reverse of your card/paper stock and temporarily stick down with low tack tape to prevent any movement. Using a propelling (automatic pencil) to get into the slits in the template draw around the inner sections of your design.

Step One

For the upper layers draw around (or cut with a knife directly) into the inner slits of each section only, (where the red lines are as shown in this example). I personally recommend drawing with a pencil
so your lines are neater and you do not blunt your knife so quickly.

Step Two

For the under layers of each piece, select your coordinating paper/card and draw around and cut out in outer grooves situated 5mm on two of the sides only of the same inner layers you have previously done in step 1, (where the red lines are as shown in this example.) You only ever increase the shape in 2 directions, never more than this.

Step Three

You can use all the sections, or just some of them.

Sections can be made larger by missing one section and extending the length as shown by the red lines.

Step Four

4. Shows the bottom layer of an extended section.

Step Five

If you wish to incorporate any of the pricking, stitching, paper weaving, or the cut and fold designs into the top layer, do this now, or before you start to cut the top layer sections up..

Many of these additional elements can be interchanged with all the other templates.

Note: Brads and Eyelets will also need to be added now, before you stick the top layer onto the corresponding bottom layer.

If you are working with lots of sections it is a good idea to number the top layers and identically number the bottom layers, to make matching them up easier in stage 6

Remove the template from the card/paper and cut all the pieces out, nice and straight using a craft knife and metal ruler or a sharp pair of scissors.

Step Six

Using a dry glue stick, stick the smallest of the two sections onto the top of the larger piece, as shown.

The under layer creates a border of 2.5mm all round the top layer.

Step Seven

Take all your prepared pieces and arrange onto your card front. Arrange with an even space of 5mm between each section, whilst also making sure the outer shape of the design is neatly aligned also.

If you are putting these shapes onto an additional mat/layer before finally putting onto your card blank, you need to trim the whole thing down to size, again leaving a 5mm outer edge border

NOTE : you cannot draw around the template as your guide for the final size or shape and then try to fit the sections into it, because you have put spacing between the sections the finished design will be larger than the actual template is.

Step Eight

Finally decorate the rest of the sections with your chosen embellishments and layer onto your card blank.

Some Embellishment suggestions and other ideas

Ribbons, Ric-rac,Charms, Gems, 3-d Mini Decoupage,Stickers, Peel Offs, Buttons, Punch outs, Die cuts, Beads, Rub- Ons, Metal Shapes, Flowers, Brads, eyelets, Wooden embellishments, and whatever else you can find in your crafting collection.

Another nice idea if you have some large rubber stamps with a scenic picture , is to rubber stamp your image and colour in, then cut your top layer for the scrap magic from the stamp image, giving a mosaic feel to the design.

The Oval is nice for stained glass windows, ideal for weddings, sympathy, christenings ,
Easter etc.

Scrap Magic Christmas Tree

Materials needed:
ruler, cutting mat, knife, scissors, double-sided tape or glue, 3D kit, removable tape, pencil

Materials needed to make this card:
- 1 Sheet card red
- 1 Sheet card dark green
- 1 Sheet card spring green
- 1 Sheet card grass green
- 1 Sheet card white
- Scrap Magic template MaS007
- 3D sheet F&F nr 8867
- Star punch
- Three red glitter stones (2 large, one small)
- Gold brad
- Embellishment "leaf"

How to make this card:

Place the template on a piece of grass green card paper and draw all the large shapes on it. Then place the template on white and red card and draw all the smaller shapes. Cut the shapes out using a knife or scissors.

Stick the small shapes on the large shapes and then stick everything on a piece of spring green card . Make a hole in the shape where you want to hang the leaf and affix the leaf to it with the brad.

Cut out the Christmas tree, but make sure it is 0.5 cm larger everywhere than the original template.

Now stick everything on a piece of dark green card and do exactly the same thing, i.e. cut it out but make sure the tree is 0.5 cm larger again than the last one.

Fold the red sheet in half and stick the dark green tree on it, make sure that you stick it on one side of the fold, so that you can still open the card. Cut around the tree at 0.5 cm.

Cut the 3D picture and stick it on the card. Then add the stars and glitter stones and your card is done.

TOP TIP IDEA
If you combine the Christmas Tree ( minus the trunk) with the three small sections from the oval to form a hull shape you can make a Scrap Magic Yacht which can be decorated with numbers on the sails, capstains, anchors, nautical knots etc
